Born in London, Joseph Nollekens was the son of a Flemish genre painter. He trained with a Flemish sculptor in London before going to Rome in 1762. Gaining employment in Bartolomeo Cavaceppi's workshop, he restored ancient sculptures as well as terracottas by such artists as Michelangelo and Giambologna. Matronly Juno, goddess of marriage in Roman mythology, bares one breast and undoes her dress for Paris's judgment of who among the three goddesses, Venus, Minerva, and Juno, was the most beautiful. This ample figure, crowned and heavily draped, stood with three other marble statues representing Venus, Minerva, and Paris.
