Elaborately carved brackets commonly hung in pairs in the grander houses of Paris to support decorative objects such as Chinese or Japanese porcelain vases. Although scholars have not identified the carver of this piece, he would have been an accomplished *menuisier* who could have also made tables, chairs, and wooden paneling.
