Like many secular books of the period, this copy of *Concerning the Fates of Illustrious Men and Women* opens with an image depicting the presentation of a book to a patron. The presenter kneels to the right, offering the blue-bound volume to the king on the left. The identity of the figures remains unclear. The rubric below the image reads: *Cy commence le prologue du translateur du livre de iehan boccace des cas des nobles hommes et femmes* (Here begins the translator's prologue to the book by Giovanni Boccaccio concerning the fates of illustrious men and women).
