This image of an automobile windshield transforms the implied violence of shattered glass into lacy spider webs of brilliant light. In contrast to the visual noise of the reflections, a small Bible sits silently open. In a recent project, *The City,* Mitch Epstein focused for the first time on his hometown of New York City. Rather than strictly documenting the city, this series shows the transcendent aspects of ordinary scenes. Through his elevation of such banal details, Epstein has carved his own distinctive niche in the vast, intimidating history of New York photography.
