Here the turbaned figure at right appears to direct the viewer's meditation upon the meaning of the image by pointing at Christ on the cross with one hand and down toward the skull and bone with the other. Mary is shown at left with a sword piercing her heart, a graphic and symbolic indication of her deep sorrow.
