Small portable inkstands of this shape--that incorporate a handle for carrying and a candleholder – were apparently first made around 1770. The novel form may have been designed by the Parisian dealer Simon-Philippe Poirier who is recorded as having delivered one of similar description to Madame du Barry, Louis XV's mistress, in October of that year.
