> In this very early image by André Kertész from 1915 we see a farm yard with pigs, chickens, and a bull. Later between 1932 and 1935, Kertész found himself diverted into an unexpected subject area: animals Kertész took the subject of animals so seriously that his second monograph was devoted to this theme. In it he established his deliberate creative strategy of straddling the line between art for art's sake and communication with a popular audience. Kertesz’ second book of photographs, *Nos amis les bêtes* [Our friends, the animals] (Paris, 1936) was devoted to animals.
