Head of Venus (Capitoline type)

An over life-size head of the Capitoline type Aphrodite. The head is broken off at the neck and turned slightly to the left. The face is oval shaped with little indication of facial bone structure. The nose is mostly missing and most of the polished surface has been stripped away on the left side of the face. The hair is rendered in thick wavy strands. It is parted in the middle and pulled back in to a bun at the back of the head. The frontmost strands of hair are gathered and tied into a bow resting on the top of the head. Two curly tendrils fall in front of each ear. The backs of the hair, bow and bun are only summarily carved.
