After the woman clothed with the sun gives birth to her child, understood by medieval commentators to represent Jesus, she is pursued by a great red dragon with seven heads and ten horns. As the dragon leaps from the earth, the woman looks back over her shoulder, visibly frightened. Before the dragon reaches her, however, an angel gives her two eagle's wings so she can fly away to safety.
