The sarcophagus lid is carved as a couch, upon which recline a husband and wife. Both wear a chiton and a mantle. In his left hand, which rests on a cushion, the man holds a book-roll. He embraces his wife with his right arm. She rests her left arm on a second cushion, and holds her hand up to her chin. Her right arm rests upon her flank and thigh, and she holds some of her drapery. The heads of the couple were left unfinished. The front of the mattress is decorated by sets of vertical straps.
