Self-taught as a photographer, British-born Herbert Ponting wore many hats in his long and illustrious career. After a stint as a rancher in California, he got swept up in a late gold rush, becoming manager of a mine in 1898. Three years later, *Leslie's Weekly* newspaper commissioned Ponting to tour the Far East and record his impressions in photographs and words. An earlier job working for stere
