Obverse: Nude ephebe riding horse to right; he reaches forward to crown the horse as above, winged Nike crowns him. Inscribed beneath the horse: ΣΙΜ [SIM, probably a magistrate's mark.] Reverse: Taras, riding dolphin to left. Taras holds a kantharos in outstretched right hand and a trident in left arm; curling waves below. Inscribed vertically above dolphin's tail: TΑΡΑΣ [Taras]. Inscribed between dolphin and waves: TH [ΤΗ.] Taras is both the name of the city that minted this coin and of a legendary figure who was saved from drowning by a dolphin sent by his father, the god Poseidon.
