After a stagecoach accident, he convalesced back home in England and learned photography. Upon returning to the States in 1867, he soon earned his reputation photographing the landscape. Mount Broderick and Liberty Cap, known as "Kachoomah" and "Mahta" respectively in the native Ahwahnechee language, can be seen as two adjacent curved-top rock formations in the center of the image. Below them is Vernal Fall or "Py-wy-ack" Fall. Half Dome or "Tis-sa-ack" is partially visible on the upper left area of the image.
