Little is known about Charles Winter. Active in Strasbourg, France, he had been a lithographer before turning to photography. Beginning in the 1850s, his career spanned several decades. During this time, Winter made daguerreotypes, albumen prints, and cartes-de-visite. His subjects included Swiss mountaineering scenes and topography as well as portraits.

In this distinctive portrait, Charles Winter posed the sitter in such a way as to suggest a conversation with the viewer. The man's tilted face, defined by knitted brows, makes his countenance especially alert and engaging. The power of the image is in the twisted pose, enhanced by light along the buttons and edge of the coat, that animates his body. The dramatic foreshortening of the subject makes him appear legless.
