At twenty, Carleton Watkins headed out to California to make his fortune. After working as a daguerreotype operator in San Jose, he established his own practice and soon made his first visit to the Yosemite Valley. Watkins's visits to Yosemite in the mid-1870s are not as well documented as his other trips there. The inventory numbers he assigned to his pictures provide clues and help date pictures such as this one to between 1872 and 1875.
