The second living creature, with a face like a lion, leads Saint John to where he can see the second horseman, representing civil strife: "And there went out another horse that was red: and to him who sat on it was given a large sword in order that he might take peace from the earth and that they might kill one another. (Apocalypse 6:4) The red-faced horseman turns to confront the viewer directly, menacingly holding a drawn sword.
