Two letters--"K" and "L"--written in gold, begin this calendar page for the month of January. The letters are an abbreviation for the Latin word *Kalendae*, meaning "Kalends" or the first day of the month. Surrounded by a reddish-pink border, they appear on a blue ground, with fine filigree work in white pen decorating the outer edges. The most important feast days for the month, such as the Circumcision of Christ on January 1, appear in red.
