Born into an aristocratic Mexican family, Dolores del Rio came to the United States in 1925 to embark on an acting career. Man Ray must have made this portrait in traditional Tehuana garb prior to 1942, when Del Rio returned to Mexico to contribute to the development of film as an art form there. Besides this picture and some shots of Ava Gardner, scholars know of few other celebrity photographs from Man Ray's years in Hollywood.
