Jacques Henri Lartigue's photograph, made on the beach at Brittany, France, transcends mere snapshot to reveal the photographer's perfect timing. He caught the Alsatian dog posed at full stretch, just about to close his mouth on a morsel tossed in the air. The small, almost silhouetted boy standing in the surf at the right raises his arms in triumph, as if simultaneously acknowledging the impressive success of the catch. This image, made when Lartigue was more than eighty years old, captured the spontaneous enthusiasm for and delight in visualizing the world that characterized his work from his pre-teen years onward.
