Statue of a Boar

The sculpture represents a life-size standing boar with a lowered head and front legs braced in the typical defensive posture. The mouth is closed with the tusks carved in relief against the snout. The proper left eye is round and centered within an almond-shaped socket. An erect crest of stiff bristles along the spine is carved as a series of vertical grooves. The hair is continuous, not interrupted midway along the back, as it often appears on statuettes and painted vases. The beast has a prominent curling tail and large testicles. The figure and base are carved from one piece of stone, but had separately carved ears, one of which is extant, that terminate in a rounded tenon inserted into a socket. Cuttings on the lateral sides of the plinth at the center, 4.0 x 3.0 cm and 2.5 cm deep, are probably for clamping onto another pedestal block or monument.
