The Brown Sisters, Cambridge

Since 1975 Nixon has been creating an ongoing series of portraits of his wife, Bebe, and her three younger sisters, Heather, Laurie, and Mimi. Once a year they assemble and position themselves in the same order for the camera. Nixon makes a dozen or more negatives but only keeps one (such as this example, made in 1986). The large negatives of his eight-by-ten-inch camera enable him to accurately capture their expressions and the gradual changes in these four related but individual women over time.
