View of the European settlement on Shamian or Shameen Island as seen from across the Zhu Jiang River, also known as the Pearl or Canton River. The bell tower of Christ Church, also known as Shamian Christian Church or Sha Mian Tang, is visible among the colonial buildings along the waterfront area. A number of boats and "sampans," or covered boats, can be seen on the water.
