The blowing of the fourth trumpet heralds the extinguishing of a third of the stars, a third of the moon, and a third of the sun. The illuminator represented the scene so as to suggest that the air the angel blows through the trumpet causes the damage; quite literally, a third of the sun, moon, and stars is blackened.
