Eugène Atget never called himself a photographer; instead he preferred "author-producer." A private, almost reclusive man, Atget first tried his hand at painting and acting, then began to photograph *vieux Paris* (Old Paris) in 1898. He photographed in part to create "documents," as he called his photographs, of architecture and urban views, but he supported himself by selling these photographs to

From the Getty Museum record

> From 1904 until the end of his life, but particularly during the 1920s, Eugène Atget often made photographs of the gardens at the site of the palace of Saint-Cloud, just outside Paris (see also [90.XM.64.25](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/63460/eugene-atget-saint-cloud-tree-roots-saint-cloud-park-french-negative-1906-print-1920s/), [90.XM.64.51](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/63486/eugene-atget-st-cloud-french-1915-1919/), [90.XM.64.60](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/63495/eugene-atget-parc-de-saint-cloud-french-1904/), [90.XM.64.61](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/63496/eugene-atget-parc-de-saint-cloud-french-1904/), [90.XM.125](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/64720/eugene-atget-saint-cloud-french-about-1920/), [2002.37.11](https://www.getty.edu/art/collection/objects/172736/eugene-atget-saint-cloud-park-paris-french-1924/)). They were designed by the great French landscape architect André Le Nôtre (1613-1700), the principal inventor of the classical "French garden." Most famous for the layout of the gardens at Versailles, which he devised for Louis XIV, Le Nôtre worked at Saint-Cloud for the king's brother, the duc d'Orléans. In both settings he used similar formal elements: reflecting pools, fountains, symmetrically placed urns and statuary, and massive blocks of clipped shrubbery bordering long axial vistas. > > Adapted from *Eugène Atget*, In Focus: Photographs from the J.
