Rejecting the tradition of the limited-edition, handcrafted artist's book, Ed Ruscha produced sixteen photo books between 1963 and 1978 in large editions on high-speed professional presses. Most feature snapshot-like photographs that he made with his 2 1/4-inch-format Yashica camera and sequenced in straightforward layouts. Ruscha's third book, Some Los Angeles Apartments (1965), presents 34 photographs of apartment buildings in Los Angeles and environs. Photographed from a vantage point on the opposite side of the street, the images capture the entire building, either head on or in slight perspective, intentionally void of human presence. Many of the square-format images would be cropped to a horizontal format when published to reduce the expanse of street in the foreground and place emphasis on the building itself.
