Helen Being Abducted by Paris at the Shrine on Cythera

Paris leads Helen of Troy by the arm, pointing towards a city in the background. The wife of the king of Sparta, Helen, was charmed by Paris and decided to abandon her kingdom for Troy. According to some sources, Paris abducted Helen while she was at a shrine on the island of Cythera. The representation of a golden idol holding a lance and shield probably refers to this version of the story. The actions of the lovers led to the Trojan War and to the deaths of Paris’s siblings and parents, described elsewhere in this manuscript.
