The delicate gilt wood carving that drapes down the sides and over the top of this elaborate mirror contrasts dramatically with the rectangular, ebonized frame. At its top, a nude image of Apollo seen from the back playfully peers at his own reflection in the glass from within a framed cartouche. A mask in a shell, broken architrave elements, and C-scrolls entwined with flowers surround the cartouche and spill down the sides of the mirror. This looking glass would have been displayed over a similarly embellished commode or side table in a Roman palace of the 1700s.
