The photographer of this panorama apparently made his image from the top of the campanile, the bell tower, of Pisa's church of San Piero al Grado. The placid Arno River bisects the city with its smooth, flat surface. At the upper left, in the northwest corner of the city, the famous leaning tower, cathedral, and baptistry dominate the skyline. The faint outline of the Tuscan hills is visible in the distance. A closer view of a street along the Arno in Pisa can be seen in another daguerreotype in the Getty Museum's collection.
