Initially a student there from 1923 until 1928, he went to work in one of the workshops at the school the year after graduation and taught representational drawing. During the thirties and forties, Kuhr worked as a painter in Berlin. In 1947 he did typographic design, and the following year he was appointed chair at the Hochs
