From the Getty Museum record

In 1930 *Creative Art* journal published this Walker Evans photograph to accompany architect Frank Lloyd Wright's essay on "The Tyranny of the Skyscraper." Captioned "What beauty the whole has is haphazard," this view encompasses a hodgepodge of architectural styles littering the skyline yet holding together in a tightly choreographed dance. The Lincoln Building, with its crenellated tower, appears in the center, literally eclipsed by the towering structures surrounding it, which cast it into deep shadow. At the lower left, a sliver of sunlight picks out two crane ladders, emphasizing their pivotal role in the work at hand.
