It was only after his teacher's death that Dusart developed his own, more refined style. Dusart was born in Haarlem in 1660, the son of a church organist. In his late teens, he studied painting with Van Ostade, and his earliest works relied heavily on his teacher's composition

In this lively and comical scene, two peasants watch a man armed with a jug take a drink from a glass. Unkempt and dressed in patchwork clothes, the drinker appears to sway as he gulps his beer. While he is thus occupied, the peasant couple look on with their arms linked behind the woman's back. They appear amused and are unaware that a little dog observes them. Dusart meticulously rendered these characters in vivid color, using the underlying black chalk to lay out the design and model the faces and figures. Without apparent moralizing message or clear narrative, this finished work of art displays a light-hearted approach to a rustic subject.
