A strong geometric pattern of diamonds, ovals, and rectangular shapes emerges from the use of contrasting colors of olive and rosewood in this simple, restrained parquetry veneer. This armoire's refined and elegant form and decoration, unadorned by gilt-bronze mounts, presents a more subdued, less lavish appearance than furniture made for the French court. This cupboard would have been used in the more intimate private quarters of a Parisian townhouse, rather than in the public rooms. Probably placed in a bedroom or study, its interior shelves and drawers would have stored small articles of clothing, papers, or books.
