Some structures are designed primarily as monuments to style, while others are built mainly with function in mind. Possibly commissioned by the owner of these properties to document his holdings, these paired daguerreotypes show a rural home and a business in the mid-1800s. The one-story structure on the right is a simple and traditional family residence, while the sturdy, functional warehouse or mill at left was unmistakably built to fulfill a commercial purpose.
