Even at first glance, the burnt pine tree in the foreground of this image offers a grim message about the environmental state of an area where Robert Adams once lived. Beyond the community of Lyons, Colorado, which you can see in the background, large housing developments were being built not far from the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant. Adams visually expressed his deep concern for the region by deliberately tilting the horizon.
