Close created a series of portraits and figure studies in collaboration with the daguerreotypist Jerry Spagnoli, who has mastered this antiquated process, requiring the use of hard-to-obtain, highly toxic materials. Close, mostly known for his variations on the human face, here experimented with skin as pure form. In choosing a small-busted woman as his model, Close blurred the line between female and male.
