Technical analysis indicates that while some elements of this commode’s carcass and the majority of the gilt-bronze mounts are original to the 1700s, much of it has been significantly altered. The current appearance of the commode must be the result of one or more restoration campaigns with the piece being completely re-veneered in the late 1800s or at some point during the 1900s.
