From a vantage point high on the opposite side of a wide river, Sebastian Vrancx looked down and sketched this scene on the other side of the bank. Using pen and brown ink, he lightly delineated the buildings, foliage, and strange, hollow rock formations. Animated lines indicate smaller details such as the pattern of the brickwork and the rushing water, and broad applications of gray and brown wash suggest the dark shadows cast by the cliffs and give added texture and depth to the rocks and buildings in the foreground.
