In this miniature from the *History of Charles Martel,* the army of Lorraine, led by Count Arnault, and the forces of Burgundy, led by his wife Lydia and her two sons, are about to begin a battle. The Burgundians stand in the background at the left, under the banner of the double eagle and *BORDEAUS,* while the forces of Lorraine mass at the right. In the foreground, the leaders of the opposing forces meet on horseback in advance of the fighting. Loyset Liédet and Pol Fruit depicted this scene not as an event from the past but in terms of the pageantry and splendor of late medieval court life. Lydia sits sidesaddle upon her horse, fashionably dressed in the elegant style of the Burgundian court of the later 1400s.
