>And when [the lamb] had opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying "Come, and see." And behold a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales. >(Apocalypse 6:5) The third living creature, bearing the face of an ox, gently leads Saint John with his cloven hoof. The third horseman holds scales used for weighing food and wine, referring to his association with famine.
