When seen without illumination in the megalethoscope viewer, this scene across the Tiber River in Rome shows two fishermen in daylight in the foreground with Castel Saint’Angelo and the dome of St. Peter’s visible in the distance. However, when illuminated, the scene transforms from day into twilight and eventually night by means of wooden flaps on the projector that can be opened and closed to control the light levels. Pinprick perforations in the print achieve the shimmering highlights on the water's surface. The overall coloring is a result of a hand-painted scrim glued to the back of the albumen print, which when lit gives off a tinted glow.
