Through a skillful manipulation, the light coming from above and behind the figures casts the faces of mother and child in a softly modulated half-shadow. Their close grouping and familiar, intimate gestures evoke tenderness. The reflected light on the woman's pointing finger and on the glowing white pages of the open book forms a strong visual triangle, drawing the viewer's eye and serving to integrate and balance the composition.
