This patera (shallow bowl) is undecorated except for a single serpentine handle with a knob at either end, and one placed centrally on the raised part of the handle. Wealthy Romans, such as those who owned luxurious homes on the Bay of Naples, used vessels like this for religious rituals and for handwashing during banquets.
