For many German artists, picturesque sites like the Serpentara, a wild oak grove in the mountains east of Rome, became the embodiment of their love for Italy. As his colleague Ludwig Richter expressed, "Reinhold sat up there almost every day, without leaving the spot, until late in the evening. His drawings in graphite were cleanly executed . . . the viewpoint was always splendidly chosen . . . the execution was masterly and confident, with a great understanding of forms." Reinhold never returned to Germany; he died in Italy a few years after this drawing was made.
