Majestically written in gold and silver, the opening of Luke's Gospel, *Quo[niam] quide[m] multi conati sunt ordinare narrationem* (Since many have attempted to arrange a narration...), sits upon a red-purple textile pattern surrounded by a frame of meander designs. This incipit faces the evangelist's portrait across the double-page spread.
