Designed by Walter Gropius, the new workshop building at the Bauhaus School was destined to become one of the best-known examples of International Style architecture. In Lucia Moholy's view of the nearly completed structure, the radically different wall of glass is a prominent feature, but the severe lines of this functionalist masterpiece are surprisingly softened at one end by the shadow of a tree's branches.

Lucia Moholy, née Schulz, studied art history at Prague University and worked in publishing before meeting László Moholy-Nagy in 1920 and becoming interested in photography. They married the following year and began collaborating on writings on photography and art theory. After the couple moved to Weimar, Germany, where Moholy-Nagy had accepted a teaching position at the newly opened Bauhaus schoo
