An unknown illuminator was especially inventive in imitating the variegated colors of marble columns on this canon table page. Canon tables, composed of columns of numbers indicating specific passages in the text of the Gospels, naturally invited an architectural decorative treatment. These columns are reminiscent of the architecture of ancient Rome.
