Pride of ownership was undoubtedly the primary reason that the owners of this house commissioned this daguerreotype. They probably also wanted to record its extensive remodeling, including a trellised arbor on the side of the house, visible under the tree at right. Three family members stand on the massive, newly built front porch dominated by columns. A servant steadies the family's two-wheeled cart and horse in the foreground. The photographer created this scene of American prosperity by placing his camera at a high level, where it encompassed all the details of the property.
