Two stark birch trees stand like sentries on the edge of a meadow. They are stripped of their foliage, and a riot of branches fills the sky like scribbles upon a blank sheet. The graphic black and white of the tree trunks stands out against the medium-gray stand of trees in the far distance and the patchy scratch of ground on which they stand. Albert Renger-Patzsch photographed the trees on an overcast day, so that the lighting would appear even and flat, thus emphasizing their forms.
