Moving to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1860, New England-born Jay Dearborn Edwards made ambrotype portraits and views of New Orleans. He also photographed construction projects of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers along the Mississippi River before the Civil War. When war broke out, Edwards seized the opportunity and went to Pensacola Bay, Florida, to photograph Confederate army troops as they prepar
