Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann, the son of a hardware store owner, moved from Germany to Paris in 1930, where he met and befriended *Vogue* photographer Baron George Hoyningen-Huene. He introduced Horst to that magazine, for which Horst began working in 1931. The following year Condé Nast, *Vogue's* publisher, invited Horst to work in New York for six months.
